AWS Batch Introduces Quota Management for SageMaker Training Jobs
AWS Batch now offers quota management for SageMaker Training jobs, allowing administrators to allocate GPU resources by team, project, or workload and use new resource-sharing and preemption strategies to maximize utilization and minimize manual coordination.
What changed?
AWS Batch has added quota management for SageMaker Training jobs. This feature lets administrators divide compute resources, such as GPUs, into quota shares assigned to different teams or projects. Resource-sharing strategies—RESERVE, LEND, and LEND_AND_BORROW—govern how idle capacity is allocated and shared. Administrators can also set up preemption policies, both for reclaiming lent capacity (cross-share) and allowing higher-priority jobs within the same share to preempt lower-priority jobs (in-share). The SageMaker Python SDK (v3 and above) now supports these features through its aws_batch module.

Why does it matter to an everyday developer?
Developers can now run training jobs without manual queue management or coordination between teams. Teams benefit from improved resource utilization, fewer delays for high-priority jobs, and less overhead for infrastructure administrators. Configurable sharing and preemption strategies mean workloads with varying priorities and tolerance for preemption can coexist, letting developers make better use of shared, GPU-intensive infrastructure.
What can the developer do now?
If you use SageMaker Training jobs and share GPU resources across teams or projects, you can leverage these quota management features to allocate and share capacity according to your organization’s needs. With the latest SageMaker Python SDK, define quota shares and resource-sharing policies in AWS Batch and submit jobs programmatically to specific quota shares. To get started, ensure you have the necessary AWS Batch permissions and upgrade to SageMaker Python SDK v3 or above. Then, configure quota shares and policies that match your team’s workflow and test with your existing or new model training jobs.
