Build efficient agents with sequence-level knowledge distillation on Amazon SageMaker AI
Amazon SageMaker AI now supports a documented pattern for using sequence-level knowledge distillation (SeqKD) to transfer agentic behaviors from a large, frontier 'teacher' model to a smaller, cheaper 'student' model. Developers can build more cost-effective tool-using assistants using only the teacher’s API-generated text outputs.
What changed?
Amazon SageMaker AI now provides a clear walkthrough for using sequence-level knowledge distillation (SeqKD) to fine-tune small models for agentic tasks. SeqKD enables developers to train a 'student' model on the text outputs of a larger, proprietary 'teacher' model—such as those available only via API—without accessing the teacher’s internal weights or logits. The result is a smaller, more cost-effective model that can imitate the multi-step, tool-using behaviors of the teacher. This method is specifically useful for building production-scale assistants where each model call can be expensive.

Why does it matter to an everyday developer?
Deploying agentic assistants with large models can become prohibitively expensive, as these systems require multiple API calls per user task. SeqKD allows developers to keep much of the teacher’s quality but move agent execution to a smaller, faster, and cheaper model that they control. This approach is especially relevant for agentic workflows that lack high-quality labeled data: the teacher model’s own responses become the targets for fine-tuning. Developers with only API access to frontier models (with no ability to download weights or read logits) can still apply SeqKD, broadening its applicability.
