Advanced Web Content Preparation for Amazon Bedrock Knowledge Bases Using Crawl4AI
Developers can now use Crawl4AI as a preprocessing layer to prepare and enrich web content before ingesting it into Amazon Bedrock Knowledge Bases. This supports selective extraction, custom metadata, and multiple document formats, improving control over what enters knowledge bases.
What changed?
Amazon Web Services has published a workflow showing how to use Crawl4AI, an open source Python crawler, as a content preparation step for Amazon Bedrock Knowledge Bases. This enables developers to pre-process, enrich, and selectively extract web content before uploading it for ingestion into managed knowledge bases via Amazon S3. Developers can generate structured Markdown files with associated metadata sidecars which improve downstream retrieval and filtering. This custom pipeline sits alongside the newly available managed Amazon Bedrock Web Crawler connector, providing a manual alternative when more targeted extraction is required.

Why does it matter to an everyday developer?
This update gives developers greater flexibility and control over the web content incorporated into Amazon Bedrock Knowledge Bases. Instead of ingesting entire web pages, developers can now use Crawl4AI to: - Extract only the most relevant regions of a page using CSS selectors. - Remove boilerplate or navigation to focus on main content. - Add custom metadata attributes, such as crawl time or content category, to support fine-grained retrieval and filtering. - Handle JavaScript-rendered content before ingestion. The ingestion process supports batch workflows and accepts multiple formats, including Markdown, HTML, PDF, and DOCX. However, real-time retrieval from the web at query time is not supported in this path.
