Selected Models Deprecated in GitHub Copilot as of October 2, 2026
GitHub Copilot has deprecated four LLM models across all its features. Developers must now switch to supported alternatives to maintain code completion and chat functionality.
What changed?
As of October 2, 2026, GitHub Copilot deprecated the following models across all Copilot experiences (including Copilot Chat, inline edits, ask and agent modes, and code completions): Gemini 3.5 Flash, Gemini 3.6 Flash, Kimi K2.7 Code, and Claude Opus 4.7. These models are no longer available for use in any Copilot workflows.

Why does it matter to an everyday developer?
If your organization or project relied on any of the deprecated models, code suggestions, completions, and chat features using these models will no longer work. To avoid disruption, you must transition to supported model alternatives. For Copilot Enterprise environments, admins need to confirm that allowed models are updated in Copilot settings.
What can the developer do now?
- Switch to the recommended replacement models: Gemini 3.8 Flash (for Gemini 3.5/3.6), Kimi K3 (for Kimi K2.7 Code), and Claude Opus 5.5 (for Claude Opus 4.7).
- Enterprise administrators should verify and enable access to these models via Copilot's model policy settings.
- Check your Copilot Chat model selector in VS Code or on github.com to ensure new models are available.
- No manual removal of deprecated models is required—the change is automatic.
