Secure Web Search Now Available for Claude Desktop on Amazon Bedrock with AgentCore
Amazon Bedrock now allows Claude Desktop users to securely search the web in real time using AgentCore Gateway and JWT-based authentication, keeping all traffic and authentication within AWS infrastructure.
What changed?
Claude Desktop on Amazon Bedrock can now be connected to secure, real-time web search via Amazon Bedrock AgentCore's Web Search target and Gateway feature. This allows the model to retrieve up-to-date information beyond its training cutoff. The integration uses JWT-based inbound authentication, allowing enterprises to leverage AWS IAM Identity Center for SSO and centralized user management while bridging with Amazon Cognito for JWT generation. All web search queries and authentication steps remain entirely within AWS infrastructure, eliminating the need for external API keys and ensuring data does not leave the AWS boundary. This feature is initially supported in select AWS regions: US East (N. Virginia), EU (Ireland), and Asia Pacific (Tokyo).

Why does it matter to an everyday developer?
Previously, Claude Desktop responses were limited by its knowledge cutoff and could not access live information. With this update, developers can provide end users with current data, such as the latest documentation, live pricing, or up-to-date research, directly within Claude Desktop. For teams working in regulated or security-conscious environments, the fact that queries and authentication never leave AWS infrastructure is particularly significant. The JWT-based authentication flow integrated with IAM Identity Center (and Cognito as a federation layer) aligns with enterprise security requirements and supports SSO. There is no need to manage or expose third-party API keys; access is governed through existing AWS identity policies.
What can the developer do now?
- Enable secure, managed web search for Claude Desktop users by configuring AgentCore Gateway in a supported AWS region.
