Claude Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5 Now Available for Regulated AI Coding in AWS GovCloud (US)
Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5 and Claude Sonnet 5.5 models are now accessible in AWS GovCloud (US) via Amazon Bedrock, supporting compliant AI-assisted coding with Claude Code for teams handling regulated workloads.
What changed?
Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5 and Claude Sonnet 5.5 models are now available via Amazon Bedrock in the AWS GovCloud (US) Regions, targeting organizations with strict regulatory requirements, including ITAR, FedRAMP Class D, and DoD IL4/IL5. Developers can use these models with Claude Code—Anthropic’s agentic coding tool—to perform AI-assisted software development in secure cloud environments. Access is provided through two endpoints: - bedrock-runtime, supporting integration with AWS features like Guardrails and invocation logging, available in us-gov-west-1 and us-gov-east-1 - bedrock-mantle, supporting advanced Anthropic capabilities like server-side tools, available in us-gov-west-1 Developers can now run AI coding workflows directly in terminals, IDEs (VS Code, JetBrains), CI/CD, and automation pipelines within regulated environments.

Why does it matter to an everyday developer?
Teams working on government, defense, and other sensitive projects must comply with strict data residency, security, and regulatory policies. Until now, AI coding tools were not readily available for such workloads. By enabling Claude Code to use Claude Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5 in AWS GovCloud (US), organizations gain access to advanced AI-assisted development—such as code generation, cross-repo analysis, code remediation, test and lint execution, and automated pull requests—without leaving the boundaries required for compliance. This reduces manual labor, accelerates development cycles, and enables modern workflows for teams working under compliance mandates.
