AWS Introduces Hard Budget Caps (Spend Limits) for Projects
AWS has started rolling out a feature to a limited number of customers that allows you to set hard monthly spending limits for projects. When the cap is reached, the project is paused for the rest of the month.
What changed?
AWS is now introducing a much-requested feature: hard budget caps, also referred to as spend limits. This allows users to set a specific monthly spending limit for their AWS projects. If the project's costs hit this limit, AWS will automatically pause the project for the remainder of the month. The feature is currently available only to a limited number of customers and is not yet generally available.
Why does it matter to an everyday developer?
Unexpected cloud bills have long been a major concern for both hobbyists and businesses. Existing AWS billing alerts and soft caps could only warn after costs were incurred, which often left users with unwanted charges if automated systems or code went rogue. This new hard cap feature eliminates that risk: once the spend limit is met, API requests and services are paused, preventing further charges. This enables safer experimentation and use of code-generation or AI coding agents that might accidentally spin up costly infrastructure or invoke paid APIs repeatedly. Developers and teams can now avoid unforeseen expenses, reducing the barrier to using AWS for small projects and experimentation.
What can the developer do now?
If you are among the group of AWS customers who already have access to this new spend limits feature, you can configure monthly hard caps on your project budgets directly within AWS. Once set, your project will be automatically paused if the limit is exceeded, and no additional charges will accumulate that month. For developers who do not yet have access, keep an eye on the AWS console and documentation for general availability. Until available on your account, continue using AWS billing alerts and consider alternative cloud providers like Google Cloud, which also supports hard spend caps at the project or service level.
