Anthropic Releases Claude Dynamic Workflows: Fully Orchestrated Multi-Agent Coordination
Anthropic introduces 'Flows' for Claude Managed Agents, allowing the model to determine and manage its own agent topology for complex multi-phase tasks. This reduces developer overhead but increases processing costs.
What changed?
Anthropic has released Dynamic Workflows (referred to as 'Flows') for Claude Managed Agents. Previously, developers were required to configure a coordinator and specify the roster of sub-agents tasked with various parts of a workflow. With dynamic workflows, the lead Claude agent now plans, programs, and orchestrates multiple agents on its own, determining how to divide complex tasks across different workflow phases. Although developers can still configure specialist sub-agents, the system is primarily self-organizing. Developers gain visibility into agent behavior through new graphing functionality in the Claude Console.

Why does it matter to an everyday developer?
Flows significantly reduce the amount of manual configuration and management needed for multi-agent workflows. Developers no longer need to architect the orchestration logic or specify inter-agent connections for complex projects. Instead, Claude determines its optimal setup to break down and execute large, multi-phase tasks. This streamlines the development process for ambitious use cases that require coordination across many agents, while still allowing for inspection and debugging via workflow graphs. However, flows are substantially more costly than using a single agent, and certain limitations remain, such as the inability to directly message workflow sub-agents through the API.
What can the developer do now?
Developers can enable dynamic workflows within the Claude Console or through the API for tasks that benefit from rich multi-agent orchestration, such as multi-stage data processing or code review automation. They can optionally pre-configure specialist sub-agents and inspect workflow execution through new graphing tools. To control costs, developers should set explicit session budgets, as the model does not natively track its own budget. Workflow interaction still occurs via shared filesystem, and full agent-to-agent API communication is not yet supported.
